The Home Blood Glucose Test

The Home Blood Glucose TestWhat is home blood glucose test? In simplest terms, it"s a test carried out by diabetic patients to ascertain the level of glucose in their blood. Such a test can be carried out in the home of a diabetic patient by the patient himself, hence the name, home blood glucose test. The test is required to be performed by the patient at frequent intervals, in some cases daily, and in some cases two to three times a day. Indeed, the frequency of testing is necessary as, if the blood glucose level exceeds the limits then the patient risks suffering a heart or other life threatening problem. Diabetic patients cannot visit a lab to test so frequently; the patient conveniently performs the test and administers the doses of insulin to rectify the condition in the comforts of home. The most essential equipment component required to carry out home testing of blood glucose levels consists of a calibration meter. The calibration meter is available from a variety of companies around the world. Some come with AC adaptors, others are fitted with batteries. Diabetic testers may be required to make use of a single AA battery or an AAA battery. However this is the most preferred version to the AC power supply model due to its portability. The next testing component to consider is testing strips. The testing strips may be manufactured by the same company that provides the testing meters. It would be advisable to use testing strips from the same company as the meter you are using. This ensures compatibility between the meter and the strip. The testing strips are stored in air tight bottles so as not to allow moisture to affect the strip. Some meters have a container along with the machine for storing the strips. Diabetic patients may make use of a solution called the Ssugar solution control⬝. This solution is used on the strip, to help read the data from the strip. Nowadays most machines do not require this solution and hence you can do away with it. Once all is ready, it"s time to do the most dreaded part"the patient must prick himself. This is accomplished with the help of a needle called a Slancet,⬝ a short needle that has a pre-determined length. The lancet ensures that the prick doesn"t go too deep but just the right depth to get a single drop of blood. One cannot hold the needle in hand and hence a tester should have a holder in which to fit the needle. A holder is a pen shaped device which holds the needle and which also determines how deep the pricking should be. Last but not the least, cotton balls and rubbing alcohol are required to stop the bleeding and to clean the area to be pricked before and after cleaning. This should be a good start in learning what a home blood glucose test is, who requires it and what equipment is needed for carrying out a home blood glucose test. Of course, this article is intended to be used for general informational purposes only. Patients should consult their physician for questions pertaining to their condition.

Intro to a Diabetic Diet

For a successful solution for Type 1 diabetics and Type 2 diabetics to occur, one must have an active diabetic diet and lifestyle.  Hence, the goal for me is to provide you with some easy and simple diabetic recipes to conquer one and for all.

Eating foods with a low glycemic rating is especially important for all diabetics, as they do not cause such spikes in the insulin levels as foods with a high glycemic rating will.  Just by eating a diet rich in these low glycemic indexes, a diabetic can and will significantly improve their body's ability to maintain a low insulin level and a normal blood sugar level.  For a quick and easy diabetic diet, try these diabetic recipes, Here! Some low-glycemic foods are:

1) Sweet Potatoes
2) Yams
3) Yogurt
4) Poultry
5) Fish (you can eat any kind you like, but please make sure that it is wild-caught and not farm-raised)
6) Lean cuts of beef, bison, lamb (please make sure that it is organic and grass-fed)
7) Legumes and Nuts
8) Whole-grains and Whole-grain bread (Organic is always the best option)
9) Fruits (Most notably fruits that contain the pits/seeds, such as peaches, pomegranate, etc.)
10 Leafy green vegetables (Organic is always the best option)

The rule of thumb, is any foods that are not cooked but RAW, most likely has a lower glycemic rating than that of cooked food.  Obviously, it may be difficult to completely change your diet to only eating raw foods, so you can incorporate some of these raw foods into your regular diet for now.

Foods that should be avoided at all costs and are considered highly glycemic are as follows:

1) White potatoes
2) Peanuts and Peanut butter
3) Commercially packaged cereals (Oatmeal is always a good substitute)
4) White breads
5) Bagels
6) English Muffins
7) Raisins and dried fruits
8) Whole Milk and Cheeses (the reason being they are both very high in lactose - a form of sugar)
9) Cookies/Pastries and the like
10) Hot dogs/Luncheon Meats (all the processed fleshy foods)

I know it may be difficult for most people to cut out foods from the high-glycemic list, but in later posts, I will provide you with dessert recipes and other yummy foods that you will not miss eating the way you used to.  I have recently come across a significant breakthrough in reversing Diabetes once and for all - if you want to do more than just maintain your disease, you have got to Check This Out Now!

For now, check out the recipe below that I dug up.

Tropical Nut Cookies

Ingredients:
                 1 Large Egg (Organic, Cage-Free)
2 medium ripe bananas (peeled and mashed)
1/4 cup drained, crushed pineapple (in its own juices, of course the unsweetened one)
                 1 teaspoon of vanilla
1 1/4 cup of whole grain flour (wheat flour or oat flour works great)
1/3 cup of unsweetened flaked coconut
1/2 teaspoon of baking powder (please make sure your baking powder is aluminum-free)
                 1/2 teaspoon of sea salt
1/2 cup of chopped macadamia nuts

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Line a large baking sheet(s) with parchment paper. In a medium bowl combine the egg, the bananas, the pineapple and the vanilla. Whisk to blend. Add the flour, the coconut, the baking powder and the salt. Mix to blend. Stir in the nuts. Drop tablespoonfuls of dough, 2-inches apart, on the prepared baking sheet(s). Bake until lightly browned, about 10 - 12 minutes. Remove from rack and cool on pan(s) for 10 minutes. Transfer cookies to a rack and cool completely. Store in a tightly covered container.

Note: These cookies get their sweetness from the crushed pineapple and banana. There is NO added sugar.

Number of Servings: about 24 cookies

As for now, I leave you with this - "The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will involve the patient in the proper use of food, fresh air, and exercise."-Thomas Edison

You have just been diagnosed with DIABETES, now what?

You have just visited your family doctor, and have been told the horrific news that you are now a Type 1 or Type 2 diabetic - no need to panic or get depressed.  I have got you covered. If you want to go directly to what must be done as soon as you are diagnosed, Click Here.

But first, how is Diabetes accurately tested?  It is normally tested by taking a measurement of the amount of glucose in your bloodstream which can be done one of three ways:
  • One is by taking a direct measurement of your blood glucose levels after an overnight fast.
  • Secondly, by determining if your body can handle excess sugar after drinking a liquid glucose, and taking that measurement.
  • Third, the "HbA1c" (glycosylated hemoglobin A1c) test, which determines the amount of glucose molecules attached to hemoglobin, over a period of two to three months.

The most prevalent test of course, is fasting overnight and finding a recurring pattern of an elevated blood sugar level on more than one occasion.  Even though this is a good indicator as to whether or not diabetes reigns, glucose metabolism challenges nor a diagnosis of early Type 2 diabetes, will be accurate without the 4 to 5 hour Glucose Tolerance test.  It checks both the insulin and glucose levels.

So you have determined that you are definitely a diabetic based on the previous tests involved.  Now what? You can continue to read this post, or you can discover immediately how to reverse your Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes in just a few short weeks Here!

Well our goal here is to restore the blood sugar levels down to its normal range and keep it there, as well as any metabolic disorders that have evolved.  To be successful in this arena, a diabetic will now have to become active in carrying out not only a healthy lifestyle, but diet as well.  It has been known, that if the following is practiced, diabetes can be diminished in 95% of the cases:

  • Exercise - such as walking, swimming, biking, etc.  Just about anything that results in a slight increase in your heart rate, and you consider fun and not "exercise", will assist in decreasing and normalizing your blood sugar levels.
  • Managing Stress - exercise can also fall in this category because as a result of "exercise", your stress levels will be reduced.
  • Diet - the first step to a diabetic diet, is removing ALL sugars from your diet.  This will get the process started for what we would like to get accomplished here; restoring the blood sugar levels down to its normal range.
  • Nutrition
  • Detoxification
  • Natural herbs - astragalus, bitter melon, fenugreek, garlic, ginseng.

All of the above are good suggestions for normalizing your blood sugar levels, but if you are interested in reversing your diabetes then Click Here! The reason why you are here I suppose, is to acquire many quick and easy diabetic recipes and discover more about a diabetic diet.  We will discuss this next.

The Diabetic Explained

Diabetes - So what exactly is it and how do we get it?

Diabetes, also known as "diabetes mellitus" is classified as a degenerative disease, and is a disorder characterized by an increased blood sugar level. This may be due to the body's inability to produce enough insulin (called Type 1 diabetes, insulin-dependent diabetes, or juvenile-onset diabetes), or an inability to use insulin properly (called Type 2 diabetes, adult-onset diabetes, insulin-independent diabetes, or non-insulin-dependent diabetes). Insulin, which is a hormone naturally produced by the pancreas to metabolize glucose (a form of sugar that is one of the primary sources of a cells' energy supply), is either resisted in the body or non-producing.

So how is it that millions and millions of us individuals have acquired this disease, and either were diagnosed or do not even know that we have it? How is it acquired?

Well, one of the ways that Type 1 diabetes presents itself is through our usage of Bovine protein albumin, which is a substance found in cow's milk that triggers insulin dependency by provoking an auto-immune response. These antibodies found in some Type 1 diabetics, interfere with the production of insulin throughout the pancreatic cells. Individuals under the age of 30, account for most of the Type 1 diagnosis.

On another note, Type 2 diabetes which is much more prevalent in the United States, is caused by many factors such as obesity, chronic stress, a poor diet, etc.:

Obesity
, which produces the most Type 2 diabetics, is a huge factor and is the main reason why a diabetic diet is even more beneficial to maintain and resolve this disease. According to recent research, a diet which is high in sugar, or consumption of foods that turn in to sugar and lack the proper nutrients, are the causes for blood sugar metabolism issues, which in turn causes insulin resistance, which in turn causes you to acquire Type 2 diabetes.

Chronic Stress
can also bring about this disease; as the hormonal levels of stress increase, your chances of getting Type 2 diabetes also increase due to increased levels of sugar in the blood.

Since we have slightly touched on Poor Diet as one of the causes, I will not get into it in this post, as we will cover it in detail throughout this blog.  To find out more information on Type 2 Diabetes, you can Check this out!

Folks, in the end it all comes down to this. If your diet is not changed for the better, the chances of you getting Diabetes, or if you already have it - never curing yourself of this disease, has just increased dramatically. This is why a diabetic diet is all the more important for providing the body with the right amount of carbohydrates needed.  For the best Diabetes guide I know of, Click Here!

Since this will be covered in a future post, I will just like to end on this note; "LET FOOD BE YOUR MEDICINE, AND MEDICINE YOUR FOOD"-Hippocrates
